The Breast Health Global Initiative 2018 Global Summit on Improving Breast Healthcare Through Resource‐Stratified Phased Implementation: Methods and overview

Abstract: BACKGROUND:The Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) established a series of resource-stratified, evidence-based guidelines to address breast cancer control in the context of available resources. Here, the authors describe methodologies and health system prerequisites to support the translation and implementation of these guidelines into practice. METHODS: In October 2018, the BHGI convened the Sixth Global Summit on Improving Breast Healthcare Through Resource-Stratified Phased Implementation. The purpose of… Show more

“…More recently, BHGI has proposed a 'phased implementation' methodology for translating resource-stratified guidelines into clinical practice based on principles of implementation research. 5 Cancer registries comprise an essential element in evaluating cancer control strategies and the quality of care, and for setting priorities in public health. Close contact between the cancer registry, researchers and caregivers will improve the quality and use of the data, as well as the ability to understand the relevance of the findings.…”

“…Phased implementation as developed by BHGI and detailed in this supplement established situational analysis along with a trained workforce, guidelines, data, and patient pathway as a prerequisite for developing sustainable strategies with which to strengthen breast health care delivery 32 . According to this strategy, strengthening breast health care begins with addressing diagnostic and treatment capacity before focusing on early detection.…”

“…The guidelines are intended to help guide policymakers, clinicians, and advocates in developing evidence‐based, resource‐appropriate strategies for improving cancer management. How the guidelines are implemented is equally important, and there is growing attention to this process 7 . Patient advocates have an integral role to play in this process, and the Women's Empowerment Cancer Advocacy Network (WE CAN) responded to this challenge by facilitating regional networks of patient advocacy groups and providing opportunities for education and networking 8…”
