Postpartum women experience various changes in their physical and psychological health and in their relationships with their spouse and newborn. This study aimed to identify and evaluate the factors that affect the quality of life (QoL) of women within six weeks after childbirth. A prospective, cross-sectional correlational study was used. A convenience sample of 179 postpartum women was recruited from four postpartum care centers in South Korea. Participants completed structured questionnaires on postpartum fatigue, postpartum depression, marital intimacy, breastfeeding adaptation, and quality of life. Marital intimacy (β = 0.466, p < 0.001) was the most influencing factor on the QoL of women during the postpartum period. In descending order, postpartum fatigue (β = −0.192, p = 0.001), postpartum depression (β = −0.190, p = 0.001), breastfeeding adaptation (β = 0.163, p = 0.002), and occupation (β = 0.163, p = 0.004) all had a significant influence on QoL (F = 32.09, p < 0.001), and the overall explanatory power was 63.6%. It is necessary to assess and consider the physical, psychological, relational, and demographic factors of women during the early postpartum period. Comprehensive interventions need to be developed to improve the QoL of women during the postpartum period.

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the construct validity, reliability, measurement invariance, and latent mean differences in the Breastfeeding Adaptation Scale-Short Form (BFAS-SF) for use with mothers at 2 weeks postpartum. Methods: This methodological study was designed to evaluate the validity, reliability, and measurement invariance of a BFAS-SF. Data were recruited from 431 breastfeeding mothers at 2 weeks postpartum. Confirmatory factor analysis and multi-group confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to assess the factor structure and the measurement invariance across employment status, delivery mode, parity, and previous breastfeeding experience, and the latent mean differences between the two groups were then examined. Results: The goodness of fit of the six-factor model at 2 weeks postpartum was acceptable. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis supported strict invariance of the BFAS-SF across employment status and delivery mode. Full configural invariance, full metric invariance, and partial scalar invariance across parity and full configural invariance and full metric invariance across previous breastfeeding experience were supported, respectively. The results for latent mean differences suggested that mothers who were employed showed significantly higher scores for breastfeeding confidence. Mothers who had a vaginal delivery showed significantly higher scores for sufficient breast milk and baby’s feeding capability. Multiparous mothers showed significantly higher scores for baby’s feeding capability and baby’s satisfaction with breastfeeding. Conclusion: The validity and reliability of the BFAS-SF at 2 weeks postpartum are acceptable. It can be used to compare mean scores according to employment status, delivery mode, and parity.

BackgroundThe measurement invariance and latent mean differences in emotional labor across different hospital and monthly salary levels among registered nurses have never been confirmed for the Emotional Labour Scale. These issues may influence the application and efficacy of this scale in practice.PurposeThis study was developed to evaluate the factor structure of the nurses' Emotional Labour Scale and to examine the measurement invariance and latent mean differences for this scale across different hospital and monthly salary levels.MethodsData were collected from 461 registered nurses working in four general hospitals and 12 long-term care hospitals. Confirmatory factor analysis and a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis were performed to determine the internal structure and measurement invariance of the Emotional Labour Scale.ResultsThe results of the confirmatory factor analysis indicate that the factor structure model proposed by the original scale fits well with our data as well as configural invariance, factor loading invariance, intercept invariance, and uniqueness invariance. Moreover, factor variance/covariance invariance across two hospital levels as well as configural invariance, factor loading invariance, and intercept invariance across two monthly salary levels were supported. The mean score for emotional control effort in the profession of general hospital nurses was lower than that for long-term care hospital nurses. No statistically significant latent mean differences were found across monthly salary levels.Conclusions/Implications for PracticeThe findings show the Emotional Labour Scale to be a valid and reliable tool for assessing registered nurses and also comparing the mean score for emotional labor across hospital and monthly salary levels to be feasible. The scale may contribute to the development of human resource strategies.
