“…The practices implemented by the federal government were essentially through ‘medical demagogy’ and included: (i) the propagation of conspiracy theories about the origins of SARS-CoV-2; (ii) the consistent (since March 2020) defiance about the severity of pandemics, with the president declaring on TV that ‘it's just the flu’ 14 ; (iii) the ‘repositioning’ of pre-existent drugs such as chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, and ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 patients through the so-called ‘kit-covid’ 15 , 16 ; (iv) the frequent changes in the Ministry of Health (four in total) in less than a year resulting from disagreements between the current administration and Ministers of Health, especially on the push to implement ineffective drugs for COVID-19 treatment; and (v ) the delay in acquisition and denial about the effectiveness of vaccines for controlling COVID-19. As a result of the disastrous management of COVID-19 by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, a parliamentary committee of inquiry established by the Senate has confirmed the hypothesis that President Jair Bolsonaro deliberately spread COVID-19 among the population, allegedly to accelerate herd immunity.…”
