The Brazilian Portuguese Version of the Saving Inventory–Revised: Internal Consistency, Test-Retest Reliability, and Validity of a Questionnaire to Assess Hoarding

Abstract: Pathological hoarding results in clutter that precludes normal activities and creates distress or dysfunction. It may lead to an inability to complete household functions, health problems, social withdrawal, and even death. The aim of this study was to describe the validation of the Brazilian version of the hoarding assessment instrument, the Saving Inventory-Revised. “…Although the construct validity of SI-R has been investigated in several previous studies [1619], a recent study conducted in a Chinese college sample by Timpano et al [22] did not replicate the 3-factor construct using the Mandarin version of SI-R, suggesting that the factor structure of the SI-R may be different in the Chinese population. Furthermore, the 2 items on self-control in the original SI-R were removed in the Chinese version due to low factor loading.…”

“…34 Correlations between hoarding and other OCD symptoms were sometimes reported to be high in clinical samples of patients with OCD. 24 OCD patients may display hoarding secondary to OCD, thus artificially increasing correlations between both conditions. However, hoarding and OCD symptoms are much less correlated in non-OCD (e.g., epidemiological) samples.…”

“…19 Indeed, in several nonclinical samples, significant correlations between the severity of hoarding and OCD symptoms were described using different self-report scales. [20][21][22][23][24] Similarly, self-identified hoarders also described more OCD symptoms than nonclinical controls, thus suggesting an overlap between hoarding and OCD. 25 However, a number of observations have emerged suggesting that hoarding and other OCD symptoms are distinct conditions.…”
