Studies on paleopathological alterations in fossil vertebrates, including damages caused by infections and ectoparasites, are important because they are potential sources of paleoecological information. Analyzing exoskeleton material (isolated osteoderms, carapace and caudal tube fragments) from fossil cingulates of the Brazilian Quaternary Megafauna, we identified damages that were attributed to attacks by fleas and dermic infections. The former were compatible with alterations produced by one species of flea of the genus Tunga, which generates well-delimited circular perforations with a patterned distribution along the carapace; the latter were attributable to pathogenic microorganisms, likely bacteria or fungi that removed the ornamentation of osteoderms and, in certain cases, generated craters or pittings. Certain bone alterations observed in this study represent the first record of flea attack and pitting in two species of large glyptodonts (Panochthus and Glyptotherium) and in a non-glyptodontid large cingulate (Pachyarmatherium) from the Quaternary of the Brazilian Intertropical Region. These new occurrences widen the geographic distribution of those diseases during the Cenozoic and provide more evidence for the co-evolutionary interaction between cingulates and parasites registered to date only for a small number of other extinct and extant species.

The study of two caves from the Serra do Ramalho region is here presented, this is one of the most important karstic areas in Brazil. A taxonomic analysis revealed 29 taxa including Xenarthra, Cetartiodactyla and Carnivora, ranging from Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene. Taphonomic studies reveal taphocoenosis consisting mainly of complete elements, without significant transportation, but also of transported elements, composing spatial-mixed, predominantly in situ-preserved assemblages. The predominance of Xenarthrans found within the caves is probably biased by a taphonomic pattern since these animals would have life habits related to cave environments, therefore with higher chances of preservation. There is evidence of accidental death of the scelidotheriines in Lapa dos Peixes cave, where entrapment of the animals during one or more events of river flooding is pointed as a hypothesis. Deposition took place within different periods of dry and humid climate incorporating bones in clastic and chemical deposits. Cycles of sedimentary deposition and reworking (erosion) may have acted in generating complex and overlapping depositional patterns with time averaging. During depositional phase, while the cave environment was occupied rather by Xenarthrans, parts of other animals were transported in the scope of fluvial systems and gravity loads, as well as by accidental falling or scavengers. The sedimentary deposits are currently being eroded by rain runoff in both caves, causing the reallocation of finer sediments to deeper conduits but the fossils keep close to their original location. This process is exposing a large amount of fossils, allowing extensive sampling which would be impossible with active excavations, since it would require an excessively longer time and damages to the caves.

Teeth and bone remains belonging to the juvenile Megalonychidae family were found in Engrunado cave (Nova Redenção, Bahia, Brazil). We propose an index between the mesiodistal/vestibulo‐lingual measurements of caniniforms and molariforms (Imd/vl) to differentiate isolated teeth of Ahytherium aureum and Australonyx aquae, and based on this index, we suggest that the fossil material belonged to A. aureum. The diaphysis of the right humerus of A. aureum presents biogenic marks assigned to the ichnospecies Nihilichnus nihilicus, suggesting dietary interactions and potential predation by a large felid. Radiocarbon dating and carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses suggest that this individual lived in the region between 36 181 and 41 094 Cal yr bp, feeding on C3 plant resources (fruit and leaves) in a low‐density forest. The revision of radiocarbon dating and carbon and oxygen isotopes for some species found in the Engrunado cave and in the nearby Marota cave enables a climate reconstruction and indicates the maintenance of a forested environment in the region between 15 and 40 kyr.
