The rural out‐migration of young people leads to problems such as “brain drain” and the overageing of the rural population. The purpose of this paper is to study return migration motives among students originating from rural areas. The case study relates to the province of Akmola, northern Kazakhstan. Based on data collected from college and university students (n = 357), a binary logistic regression model is used to identify rural return motives. Noneconomic and economic motives are equally important in forming a return intention. Our findings do not suggest that particularly underperforming students intend to return. As expected, compared with those in major cities, students who study in a regional town intend to return more often. We also found a large difference in return intentions along ethnic lines. Students of non‐Kazakh decent are much more likely to return than ethnic Kazakhs, and the two ethnic groups have quite distinct motives indicating signs of ethnic discrimination against non‐Kazakhs in the job market.

Under alle omstaendigheder er det maskulinitetsformer, som en del af de unge maend, og i øvrigt også nogle af de unge kvinder, vaerner om, er komfortable med og er stolte af -ligesom de er stolte af det sted, de kommer fra (se også Pedersen & Gram, 2017). Således anskueliggøres det, hvordan 'sted' og 'køn', forstået som identitetsnaere sociale kategorier, glider sammen og bliver medkonstituerende for de unges måder at bruge alkohol på, -og omvendt hvordan nogle former for alkoholbrug udgør en (rural) hverdagspraksis med betydning for både de unges lokalt forankrede mulighedsbetingelser og oplevelser af sig selv som kønnede individer. I konklusionen fremhaeves det, at vi må have både nationale diskurser om 'udkantsdanmark' samt strukturelle forskelle mellem land-og byområder for øje i en nuanceret forståelse af, hvorfor unge på landet har andre alkoholvaner end unge i byerne.

In the youth mobility research, young people's geographical immobility is often associated with negative connotations. This paper challenges this discourse by analysing the location-specific insider advantages (LSIAs) of geographically immobile young adults in higher education institutions (HEI). We use data from a survey of students in two locations in Denmark: the peripheral city of Esbjerg and the metropolis of Copenhagen. We categorise students with diverse geographical mobility backgrounds into four (im)mobility types: 'local stayers', 'regional commuters', 'regional in-movers', and 'distant in-movers'. The paper explores LSIAs across (im)mobility type and location type. We find that immobile students are more likely to have a connection to, and experience with, the local labour market, to be satisfied with their social life, and to live with their parents compared with their geographically mobile peers. However, the advantages differ in type and amount between the peripheral and the urban case locations. We conclude that immobility should be (re)framed as an advantageous strategy for some young adults in early higher education.
