In this article, we contend that understanding Brazil’s current communicative landscape requires a closer examination of the relevance of legacy media outlets, challenging the widely accepted “traditional media bypass” thesis, which posits that social media platforms have overtaken traditional media as the primary influencers of political discourse, an argument often used to explain the rise of extreme-right ideologies across different national contexts. In order to test the association between voting preferences and the use of different types of media, we employ logistic regression analysis using data from a recent survey that includes numerous questions about the information and media consumption habits of Brazilian voters. Our findings highlight that legacy media, particularly broadcast TV channels like Globo, Record, and SBT, remain dominant in Brazil as sources of political information. Contrary to the bypass thesis, Bolsonaro’s supporters, while favoring social media, also consume significant amounts of legacy media. Analysis reveals stark differences in media preferences between the supporters of different political candidates, challenging the notion of an exclusive reliance on social media by right-wing supporters. The data also indicate nuanced media consumption habits, such as a preference for certain TV channels and fact-checking behaviors, underscoring the complex interplay between legacy and social media.

Although there are many frameworks of policy change analysis, little attention has been paid to policy manipulation, especially policies related to the community of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ). This article develops a framework to fill this gap; it analyzes the process of policy manipulation by drawing on the metaphor of the Potemkin village, referring to the creation of a façade to suggest advances or progress to external observers. These Potemkin features have implications for informing a case study of Brazil's LGBTQ and human rights policies. Through content analysis of federal executive policy outputs, and an analysis of changes made by political elites in instruments, ideas, and actors over 20 rights‐based LGBTQ policies adopted in Brazil between 1996 and 2020, the article finds evidence that Brazil's LGBTQ policy is a Potemkin one.

Neste ensaio analisamos como o movimento populista encarnado por Bolsonaro se engaja com a história de uma forma que ativa sua base política heterogênea. Esses engajamentos parecem ser diferentes de alguns aspectos das cronossofias modernas, como o abandono da sincronização e a apresentação coerente de uma história nacional. Em vez disso, a nova historicidade populista da extrema direita brasileira se baseia mais no apego afetivo, uma performance histórica pragmática e altamente fragmentada que, como defendemos, mais se assemelha a uma historicidade que chamamos de “atualismo”. Para demonstrar a afinidade que vemos entre essa historicidade chamada de atualismo e a versão específica bolsonarista do chamado neopopulismo, este artigo está dividido em três partes. Primeiro, apresentamos o conceito e a teoria do atualismo. Em seguida, caracterizamos as dimensões neopopulistas do bolsonarismo, ou seja, o movimento cultural e político representado por Jair Bolsonaro. Por fim, analisamos o novo populismo brasileiro em seus engajamentos com a história, especialmente as atuações da história pelos três secretários de cultura do governo Bolsonaro e como a desfactualização da realidade ganha força, criando as condições de possibilidade de o passado ser como um grande guarda-roupa cheio de imagens e modelos de prêt-à-porter.
