The BLOODSAFE program: Building the future of access to safe blood in Sub‐Saharan Africa

Abstract: Background: The supply of blood in many low-and middle-income nations in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) does not meet the patient care needs. Lack and delay of blood transfusion cause harm to patients and slow the rate of progress in other parts of the health system. Recognizing the power of implementation science, the BLOODSAFE Program was initiated which supports three SSA research study teams and one data coordinating center (DCC) with the goal to improve access to safe blood transfusion in SSA. “…These challenges also extend to the perioperative period, where infants and toddlers may have an increased risk of adverse advents if appropriate anesthesia support is unavailable. Additionally, blood availability in our setting often does not meet patient care demands [20, 21]. Thus, hemorrhage and hypothermia may increase the chance of mortality in the early excision period, especially in younger children.…”

“…Principally, the focus of this noble campaign is to disseminate information on the social value and clinical need for blood donation [10,15]. Several countries on different continents, e.g., sub-Saharan Africa [20], Bangladesh [21], Brazil, India and the USA [22], which also report similar things with obstacles that are more local in nature.…”

“…3 A number of international and regional programs have been developed to address this by engaging in blood supply and blood safety initiatives. 4 Meanwhile, transfusion medicine research in SSA remains sparse, 5 while blood shortages in this region can have devastating consequences. 6 The purpose of this study was to evaluate and describe the type of blood supply and blood bank/transfusion medicine (BBTM) services available at institutions across Africa.…”

“…Given the incidence of conditions requiring transfusion support, in conjunction with a lack of blood donors, some of the countries with the greatest unmet transfusion needs are in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) 3 . A number of international and regional programs have been developed to address this by engaging in blood supply and blood safety initiatives 4 . Meanwhile, transfusion medicine research in SSA remains sparse, 5 while blood shortages in this region can have devastating consequences 6 .…”
