Background: Previous studies have observed an association between ABO blood group and risk for certain gastrointestinal malignancies, including pancreatic and gastric cancer. However, it is unclear whether there is such an association with colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, possible relationships between ABO blood groups and Rh factor and KRAS status in patients with CRC were investigated. Materials and Methods: In 1,620 patients with CRC, blood group and Rh factor were examined and compared with the control group of 3,022,883 healthy volunteer blood donors of the Turkish Red Crescent between 2004 and 2011. The relationship of blood groups with wild type K-ras status was also evaluated. Results: Overall distributions of ABO blood groups as well as Rh factor were comparable between patients (45% A, 7.2% AB, 16.4% B, 31.4% O, and 87.2% Rh+) and controls (42.2% A, 7.6% AB, 16.3% B, 33.9% O, and 87.7% Rh+) (p=0.099). However, there were statistically significant difference between patients and controls with respect to O vs. non O blood group (p=0.033) and marginally significant difference for A vs. non-A blood group (p=0.052). Among patients, the median age was 62 (range 17-97), 58.1% were male. There were no statistically significant differences respect to sex and K-ras status. Conclusion: In present study, the ABO/Rh blood groups were statistically significantly associated with the risk of CRC. There were no relationship between K-ras status and ABO blood group and Rh factor. However further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to establish the role of blood groups and to define the mechanisms by which ABO blood type affect CRC.

Background: For decades, studies have been performed to evaluate the association between ABO blood groups and risk of cancer. However, whether ABO blood groups are associated with overall cancer risk remains unclear. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis of observational studies to assess this association. Materials and Methods: A search of Pubmed, Embase, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Web of Knowledge databases (to May 2013) was supplemented by manual searches of bibliographies of key retrieved articles and relevant reviews. We included case-control studies and cohort studies with more than 100 cancer cases. Results: The search yielded 89 eligible studies that reported 100,554 cases at 30 cancer sites. For overall cancer risk, the pooled OR was 1.12 (95%CI: between ABO blood groups and overall cancer risk still remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the association between ABO blood groups and overall cancer risk, as well as the risk of individual cancer sites.1 Materials and Methods Search strategyWe performed a systematic literature search (up to May 2013) of Pubmed, Embase, ScienceDirect, Wiley, and Web of Knowledge for studies reporting the association between ABO blood groups (self-reported or lab tested) and cancer risk. In addition, we searched the reference lists of relevant articles and reviews. Only articles published in English were considered. Two search themes were combined using the Boolean operator 'and'. The first theme, cancer, combined exploded versions of the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) cancer, tumor, carcinoma, neoplasm or malignancy. The second theme, blood group, combined exploded versions of MeSH terms blood group, or blood type.

Clinical, laboratory, genetic, and radiologic studies were evaluated for 18 patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were treated for a mean of 16.6 months with a regimen involving supplementary aspirin and piroxicam, an investigational, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agent. Although improvement in disease activity was seen, progression was evident on successive radiographs. Disease activity was not associated with the presence of any of the genetic markers. Peptic ulcers developed in 33% of patients, all of whom had type 0 blood. ABO blood typing may therefore be useful in patients with rheumatoid arthritis before consideration of therapy with potentially ulcerogenic drugs.In rheumatoid arthritis, recent evidence has suggested that the characterization of certain genetic factors, such as human leukocyte antigens (HLA), A 3 0 blood groups, and alpha-I-antitrypsin phenotypes, may be useful in predicting the severity of PATIENTS AND METHODSIn an open-label study, 45 patients, ages 21-65 years, with rheumatoid arthritis categorized as functional class I1 or 111 according to criteria of the American Rheumatism Association (4), took between 20 and 40 mg of piroxicam daily for up to 946 days (5). Patients with active ulcer disease were excluded by a preliminary upper gastrointestinal barium roentgenogram. Patients who developed gastrointestinal symptoms suggestive of ulcer disease underwent additional radiologic study. Maintenance doses of gold, prednisone (510 mg/day), and small doses of aspirin were allowed but carefully recorded. For 3 months, patients were evaluated with safety and articular checks every 2 weeks; thereafter, the checks were at monthly intervals. Patient and observer assessments, the latex agglutination test, grip strength, joint count, and the Westergren erythrocyte sedimentation rate comprised a cumulative grading method, the Modified Rheumatoid Activity Index (6). This index was calculated by expressing the raw scores of the 6 parameters as percentages, adding them together, and multiplying the sum by y6.The minimum score possible was 0, the maximum, 245 (6). Joint counts were graded 1 (subjective tenderness only), 2 (wincing), and 3 (wincing plus withdrawal) in 76 joints; the maximum possible score was 228.
