“…151 The sulfation of dextran, a branched glucan consisting of -(1 → 6)-glycosidic linkages with -(1 → 3)-linked branches, has long been explored for the development of heparin mimetics with anticoagulant activity. [153][154][155][156][157] Numerous studies have been reported to evaluate the anticoagulant activity of carboxymethyl benzylamide sulfonate dextrans (CMDBS), 113,[158][159][160][161][162][163][164][165] and these have recently been reviewed by Maynard and co-workers. 166 The CMDBS derivatives were found to inhibit thrombin activity via both AT and HCII.…”

“…DISCUSSION Thomas and coworkers (9) were able to demonstrate the appearance of an altered form of fibrinogen in the blood of endotoxin-treated rabbits. Ricketts and Walton (10)(11)(12)(13) had previously shown that high molecular weight acidic polysaccharides, of the general class of dextran sulfates, are capable of precipitating fibrinogen directly in vitro, and of producing lesions in animals similar to, if not identical with, those of the generalized Shwartzman reaction. Using these facts, Thomas et al (5,14) showed a synergism between high molecular weight dextran sulfates and endotoxin, in the production of the generalized Shwartzman reaction.…”
