The bleeding time does not predict surgical bleeding [see comments]

Abstract: F long-term popularity as the bleeding time (BT). Although the BT is useful for investigating the process of hemostasis, there are only four clinical reasons to use it: (1) to screen patients before invasive procedures; (2) to determine a cause for ongoing bleeding; (3) to explain previous

“…This propensity would account for its wide safety window between inhibition of platelet aggregation and prolongation of bleeding time. Template bleeding time is a historically used parameter of hemostatic function [Gimple et al, 1989], but controversy exists regarding the predictive value or the bleeding time for a bleeding event [Lind, 1991]. However, the safer and desirable properties of FK419 observed in the prolongation of bleeding time were supported in 4-week daily injection toxicity studies in beagle dogs, in which FK633 caused several signs of hemorrhage from 3.2 mg/kg but FK419 did not show any signs of bleeding or hemorrhage including thrombocytopenia, even at 32 mg/kg (Moriguchi et al, unpublished observation).…”

“…The eect of pentamidine on platelet aggregation did not result in a marked prolongation of the bleeding time, except in one patient, whose bleeding time increased from 5 to 15 min 1 h after treatment. Although bleeding time measurements do not predict the risk of post-surgical bleeding [11,12], they are useful in assessing the degree of impairment of primary haemostasis and, as a consequence, the risk of spontaneous bleeding in patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet function disorders. Based on our data, it is unlikely that the bleeding risk of haemophiliacs is signi®cantly increased by the minor defect of platelet aggregation induced by nebulized pentamidine.…”

“…137 Moreover, progressives treat the creation of the category, which is both more signi¢cant and more fundamental than wrangles over its outer limits, as a welcome re-de¢nition of the family. 138 For example, Lind and Barlow claim that it is 'a remarkable step for family de¢nition', 139 signifying that the jurisprudential scope of family law is beginning to be radically revised. 140 The alternative interpretation of the Law Commission's principled statement as an attempt to develop a new rationale for domestic violence law is best understood as analysis of the de¢ning characteristics of the family for these purposes as intimacy, intensity, commitment and sharing.…”
