“…OSMAN AND Y . RlZGALLA When they are compared with other breeds of African and Indian Zebu cattle reported by Williams & Bunge (1952), Tidbury (1954, Montsma (1960), Batra & Desai (1962), Kohli, Suri, Bhatnagar & Kumar (1962), Marples (1963) and Hill & Upton (1964), it is evident that Western Baggara cattle attain more weight for age than most of the abovementioned breeds. The maximum birth, weaning and yearling weights recorded in this centre were 80, 355 and 518 lb respectively for male calves and 65, 320 and 527 lb respectively for female calves.…”

“…These results are in agreement with previous reports for birth weight of Zebu cattle by Williams & Bunge (1952), Mukhtar (1961, Batra & Desai (1962) and Kohli et al (1962), but are larger than those reported by Tidbury (1954) and Montsma (1960). Marples (1963) reported an average daily gain from birth to 6 months of age of 0-95 lb for male and 0-85 lb for female calves of three Uganda breeds of Zebu cattle. The sex difference in weaning weight found in this study is equal to that reported by Mukhtar (1961) but is larger than that found by Williams & Bunge (1952), and the sex difference in yearling weight is smaller than that reported by the latter authors.…”
