The Biomechanical Relationship Between The Tendoachilles, Plantar Fascia and Metatarsophalangeal Joint Dorsiflexion Angle

Abstract: We carried out an experiment to measure the relationship between tensile force in the tendoachilles and plantar fascia strain, and how this relationship is affected by the metatarsophalangeal joint dorsiflexion angle. Eight cadaver lower extremity specimens underwent biomechanical testing. Using a servo-hydraulic testing machine, a tensile force up to 500 N was applied to the tendoachilles while the strain on the plantar fascia was measured using an extensometer. The experiment was repeated at four different m… Show more

“…Plantar fascia tension was directly proportional to Achilles tendon tension in cadavers in dynamic gait stimulator [17]. Carlson et al found that increasing tension within Achilles tendon caused increase in plantar fascia tension at four different angles of MPJ dorsiflexion [8]. Biomechanics is believed to contribute to the onset of this condition through a decreased ankle joint range of motion.…”

“…Until recently, little attention has been paid to altered biomechanics around the gastrocnemius-soleus-Achillescalcaneal-plantar fascia complex as contributor to CPF [8]. However, calf muscle stretching provides a small and statistically significant increase in ankle dorsiflexion [9].…”

“…Muscle activity before or early in stance must therefore be implicated, and indeed ankle EMG increases with walking speed (Hof et al 2002;Neptune and Sasaki 2005;Warren et al 2004). Toe dorsiflexors (Carlson et al 2000;Hicks 1954), via the windlass mechanism, or ankle plantarflexors (Carlson et al 2000;, by applying tension to the calcaneus, could act to increase tension in the PA, and hence stiffen the foot. Arch stiffness might have propulsive benefits via elastic energy return, although this is expected primarily when running (Ker et al 1987).…”

“…His football position was lineman; and inherently, he spends the majority of time pushing forward against an opponent weight bearing with his metatarsophalangeal joints dorsiflexed, placing the plantar fascia and triceps surae under tension via the windlass effect. 15 No prior treatment had been administered to treat his foot pain before he presented to the clinic.…”
