Abstract:Nerve injury or disease often leads to intractable neuropathic pain. Axons which are severed undergo Wallerian degeneration. This involves the activation of Schwann cells, mast cells, fibroblasts, keratinocytes and epithelial cells and the release of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and growth factors.
