The biology of human hair: A multidisciplinary review

Abstract: In the last century, human scalp hair morphology has been studied from multiple, and sometimes mutually exclusive, perspectives by anthropologists, biologists, geneticists, forensic scientists, and cosmetic scientists. Here, we review and synthesize historical and current research on hair to better understand the scientific basis and biological implications of hair microstructure and morphology. We revisit the origins of existing nomenclature regarding hair morphology and classifications, discuss the currently… Show more

“…Hair morphology can be examined at multiple scales, from characterization of the cortical cells, medulla, and cuticle to descriptions of overall macroscopic “texture” perceived when considering a head of hair in its entirety. Variations in hair morphology have been linked to variation in DNA sequence, as well as in cellular, protein, and chemical structure 1 . However, focus on investigating the underlying causes of the perceived macroscopic variation has come at the expense of developing language and methodology for describing the phenotype itself.…”

“…The pigment granules can be ~100–800 nm in size [11,14]. In addition to pigment granules, cortical fusi are irregularly shaped air pockets, and ovoid bodies are dark structures that may also be found in the hair's cortex [10,15]. The spacing and distribution of the pigment granules, cortical fusi, and ovoid bodies can be used to describe the hair's cortical texture.…”

“…Similarly, color is usually described by general color categories (e.g., red, blond, brown, and black) [15,16]. Variations in hair color and texture are dependent on the melanosome size, type, and shape, which can differ by ancestry [10].…”
