Abstract: Front cover: The spawning ofthe Japanese solitary ascidian Halocynthia roretzi. Although ascidians are hermaphrodites. several species, including H. roretzi. are strictly self-sterile. Back cover: The colonial ascidian Botryllus schlosseri (upper) and the solitary ascidian Ciona intestinalis (lower), both of which are cosmopolitan.
