The Biology and Economics of Coral Growth

Abstract: To protect natural coral reefs, it is of utmost importance to understand how the growth of the main reef-building organisms—the zooxanthellate scleractinian corals—is controlled. Understanding coral growth is also relevant for coral aquaculture, which is a rapidly developing business. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of factors that can influence the growth of zooxanthellate scleractinian corals, with particular emphasis on interactions between these factors. Furthermore, the kinetic princip… Show more

“…In order to optimize the breeding regimes for zooxanthellate corals, it should be understood how growth (including both skeletal growth and growth of the organic tissue) is controlled in these organisms (see review by Osinga et al, 2011). Three major processes drive the growth of zooxanthellate corals:…”

“…Being the crucial reef builders in this marine ecosystem, the diminishing scleractinian corals has raised concerns as to understand the expansion of the reef and toidentify how the factors interact [4][5][6][7][8]. One of the survey approaches is through studying coral growth by measuring the extension rate [9][10][11][12].…”

“…Coral growth rate was suggested as a standard ecological tool to determine growth tolerances of reef-building organisms [13], and this have often function as direct indicator for assessing environment condition [14][15]. The general expectation is physiological stress associated with reef degradation should lead to decreased extension rates of corals [6,8,14].…”
