G ENUS Retama L. (Leguminosae, Tribe Genisteae), is a Mediterranean genus, it naturalized in the new world recently. It includes four (Retama dasycarpa, R. monosperma, R. raetam and R. sphaerocarpa) xeromorphic, stem assimilating species. The associated species to the Retama spp. are variable and controlled by the spatial distribution and geographic location of each species. The pollen grain of Retama spp. is monad, trizono-colporate, some Retama spp. flowers are lacking nectar, others are nectar-producing species and insect pollinated. Retama spp. utilize a combination of defense mechanisms, acclimatization and adaptation strategies including the stress response genes, physiological and microbiological adaptations to both drought and salinity stresses. Soil and endophytic microbes play an important role in improving establishment of Retama species under environmental stresses. Genus Retama is eutetraploid with homogeneous karyologic chromosomes, the genome size is an adaptive trait correlated to environmental situations. This review covered the taxonomy of Retama species and their potentialities in arid lands particularly for their role in soil protection, stability, fertility, and desert rehabilitation. The phytochemistry of Retama species including flavonoids, essential oil, alkaloids, terpenes, steroids, fatty acids, polysaccharides, and mineral composition was elaborated. In addition to its multipurpose uses as fodder, ethnobotanical uses, and pharmacological activities its active compound possess anticancer, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antileukemic, antiarrhythmic, antibacterial, antifungal activities, and others. This study aimed to highlight the potentialities of the C3 shrubby-leguminous species and its adaptive strategies to the arid-desert stresses, to offer interesting trends to improve the economic crops.

Nodulation of Retama monosperma by Ensifer aridi in an Abandonned Lead Mine Soils in Eastern Morocco

Millions tons of lead and zinc wastes from the abandoned Touissit mine are stored in the open air as dikes in the vicinity of the villages in Eastern Morocco and pose a real danger to both the environment and local populations. To prevent the movement of minerals to the nearby villages and limit the damages to the environment and health, we proposed the nitrogen-fixing leguminous shrub Retama monosperma , as a model plant to use for phytostabilization experimentations. This plant species is known by its ability to grow in hard climatic conditions and in heavy metals contaminated soils. The isolation of bacterial strains nodulating R. monosperma in the abandoned mine soils will permit the selection of rhizobia to inoculate young plant seedlings before their use for the phytostabilization of the mine tailings. In this work, 44 bacteria were isolated from the root nodules of R. Monosperma grown in the Touissit abandoned mine. Twenty-four isolates were considered as true rhizobia as they possess a copy of the nodC symbiotic gene and were able to renodulate their original host. The phenotypic characterization showed that all the strains are tolerant in vitro to different concentrations of heavy metals. The analysis of the 16S rRNA sequences of two selected representative strains showed they were related to different strains of Ensifer aridi isolated from different legumes in three continents deserts. The glnII , recA , and gyrB housekeeping genes analysis confirmed the affiliation of the strains to E. aridi . Moreover, the phylogenic analysis of nodA , nodC , and nifH symbiotic genes showed that the strains are more related to E. aridi JNVUTP6 species isolated from Tephrosia purpurea root nodules in the Thar Desert in India. To our knowledge, this is the first report about the isolation of E. aridi from R. monosperma root nodules.

Retama monosperma (L.) Boiss is a coastal shrub growing on sandy soils in the SW of the Iberian Peninsula and in the NW of Morocco. Although a native species, it has been considered to show an invasive behaviour. Tolerance of R. monosperma to salinity-one of the most limiting factors of coastal systems-was assessed as an eventual explanation to its invasive character.A glasshouse experiment, where young plants were irrigated with different NaCl concentrations (5 to 600 mM), was designed. R. monosperma physiological performance was examined by measuring gas exchange, quantum yield, and water potential, at 7, 30, and 60 days after reaching the assigned NaCl concentration. At the end of the experiment, after measuring free proline content in cladodes, plants were harvested, separated in stems, roots, and root nodules, and weighted and Na + content was measured in roots and cladodes.Although plants survived to high NaCl concentrations, increasing levels of salinity resulted in a progressive reduction in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and water potential, and also in a progressive increase in proline and Na + content. Roots accumulated more Na + than cladodes in all situations. Biomass allocation pattern was modified by the NaCl levels.The high tolerance of R. monosperma to a continued exposure to salinity could be one of the factors explaining its high expansion rate in coastal areas.
