This study extends the “Queer” Asia s critique to deconstruct the coloniality of queer theory in transnational Taiwan. Focusing on Duggan’s critique of homonormativity, I used 22-months ethnographic data to examine its Taiwanese glocalization and influences on American scholars’ denigration of Taiwanese marriage equality campaigns. I argue that the glocalization of homonormativity theory has generated the disruption between queer theory and embodied experiences, falsely assumed the universalism of queer theory, and failed to recognize practices of diversifying families and resistance to neoliberalism. The homonormativity glocalization also produces “radical queer temporality” and Orientalist double standards that collude with imperialist epistemology. I conclude with strategies for a decolonial queer theory.

How does “family” function as an inherently racializing category within liberal political economy? How does this racialized assemblage of enfamilyment function as a way of securing the distinction between governance and the private sphere in ways that enable other formations of governance to be cast as deviant, dangerous, backward, and criminal? What constitutes a political order, and how do processes of racialization enacted by the liberal state mobilize notions of home, family, and gendered personhood in order to circumscribe possibilities for acknowledging other political orders (Indigenous and otherwise)? How might racialization itself, then, be understood as a mode of primitive accumulation?

How do we know that the relations, dynamics, or formations we are talking about are “kinship”? Turning back to the work of Lewis Henry Morgan, we can see how invocations of kinship translate other social formations into the privatizing imaginary of liberalism. Morgan’s texts illustrate how the characterization of varied kinds of sociopolitical relations as kinship depoliticizes them: they appear as expansively extended “personal” relations rather than modes of “political” organization. Queer intellectual and activist citations of kinship, pro- or anti-, tend to repeat this logic. Indigenous intellectuals’ deployments of “kinship,” though, break down the assumptions that characterize liberal notions of politics. They refigure kinship in ways that challenge its depoliticizing, privatizing, and insulating tendencies, opening toward models of radical relational governance and the potential for recognizing other extant political orders.
