The Benefits of Compression Methods in Acoustic Coherence Tomography

Abstract: Pulse compression methods improve the quality of ultrasonic medical images. In comparison with standard broadband pulse techniques, these methods enhance the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and increase the probing depth without any perceptible loss of spatial resolution. The Golay compression technique is analyzed here in the context of ultrasonic computed tomography, first on a one-dimensional target and second on a very low-contrast phantom probed using a half-ring array tomograph. The imaging performances we… Show more

“…When a recognizable signature is sent through the media, such as chirp signal, input and output signals delay time can be obtained using cross-correlation [26,27,28]. The maximum value for the crosscorrelation function between two signals indicates their delay time.…”

“…Automatic methods for detecting first arrivals have been proposed, including pickers based on the Akaike information criteria (AIC) [23,24] and the Hinkley criteria [25]. Alternatives include the transmission of encoded waveforms, such as the chirp-coded excitation method, where a recognizable signature is sent through the media and the TOF is estimated using a cross-correlation function [26,27,28]. In consideration of the wide range of signals and TOF detection techniques, the choice of pa-…”

“…But the spatiotemporal resolution of the image is reduced. The "lost" resolution can be enhanced using efficient signal processing methods, such as signal deconvolution [22,23] or pulse compression [24,25]. Our group has developed a procedure for multiscale wavelet decomposition of the signals allowing all available wave packets to be processed in terms of frequency and time [26].…”

“…Contemporary day communication systems relies on coding techniques for the intent of designing an efficient and reliable transmission system. Pulse compression is one such well-known coding technique being used in variety of applications, including the modern radio communication systems like radar and sonar, where propagation of radio wave or field through non-conducting medium such as air or space is involved [1][2][3][4][5][6]. The present article limits its investigation on the pulse compression application in radar used for profiling the atmosphere [7,8].…”
