As climate changes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Africa’s “forgotten” food crops offer a wide range of options to diversify major staple production as a key measure toward achieving zero hunger and healthy diets. So far, however, these forgotten food crops have been neglected in SSA’s climate-change adaptation strategies. Here, we quantified their capacity to adapt cropping systems of SSA's major staples of maize, rice, cassava, and yams to changing climates for the four subregions of West, Central, East, and Southern Africa. We used climate-niche modeling to explore their potential for crop diversification or the replacement of these major staples by 2070, and assessed the possible effects on micronutrient supply. Our results indicated that approximately 10% of the present production locations of these four major staples in SSA may experience novel climate conditions in 2070, ranging from a high of almost 18% in West Africa to a low of less than 1% in Southern Africa. From an initial candidate panel of 138 African forgotten food crops embracing leafy vegetables, other vegetables, fruits, cereals, pulses, seeds and nuts, and roots and tubers, we selected those that contributed most to covering projected future and contemporary climate conditions of the major staples’ production locations. A prioritized shortlist of 58 forgotten food crops, able to complement each other in micronutrient provision, was determined, which covered over 95% of assessed production locations. The integration of these prioritized forgotten food crops in SSA’s cropping systems will support the “double-win” of more climate-resilient and nutrient-sensitive food production in the region.

Метою роботи є дослідження діючої концепції продовольчої безпеки України для встановлення її відповідності актуальним викликам функціонуванню національної продовольчої системи та обґрунтування першочергових заходів у рамках національної продовольчої політики.Робиться припущення, що головним викликом продовольчій безпеці громадян країни є низький рівень їхніх доходів, що спричиняє недостатній обсяг споживання їжі та надмірні витрати на придбання продовольства. На основі міжнародних порівнянь таке припущення підтверджується. За допомогою лінійної множинної регресії визначаються кількісні параметри впливу обсягів сільськогосподарського виробництва та розміру подушових доходів домогосподарств на економічну доступність продовольства.Зроблено прогноз про досягнення середнього для ЄС показника розміру частки витрат на продукти харчування та безалкогольні напої в структурі сукупних витрат домогосподарств. Робиться висновок про необхідність застосування передового досвіду США з підтримання та стимулювання продовольчого попиту за допомогою програми SNAP.На основі аналізу фактичних показників добової енергетичної цінності раціону українських домогосподарств, частки витрат на продукти харчування та безалкогольні напої в структурі сукупних витрат домогосподарств України та порівняння їхніх розмірів із аналогічними показниками США, ЄС, ОЕСР робиться висновок, що головною загрозою продовольчій безпеці українських домогосподарств є обмеженість ресурсів малозабезпечених громадян країни. Висновок підтверджується результатами розрахунку лінійної множинної регресії та побудови економетричної моделі: підвищення економічної доступності продовольства для українських домогосподарств на 61% залежить від рівня їхніх подушових доходів і лише на 30% – від обсягів подушового агропродовольчого виробництва.Уперше проведено критичний аналіз вітчизняної нормативної бази продовольчої безпеки на предмет її відповідності актуальним викликам та встановлено кількісні параметри впливу обсягів сільськогосподарського виробництва й розміру подушових доходів на економічну доступність продовольства.Значення дослідження полягає в тому, що його результати є науковим обґрунтуванням методичних аспектів та практичних заходів державної продовольчої політики, спрямованої на досягнення продовольчої безпеки за допомогою програм підтримання й стимулювання продовольчого попиту, насамперед програми адресної цільової допомоги продовольчими талонами.

Agricultural diversification for crop yield stability: a smallholder adaptation strategy to climate variability in Ethiopia

Climate variability threatens food system stability, particularly among smallholders in developing countries who depend on rainfed agriculture. Farm diversification could be a relevant adaptation strategy in this context as a greater number of species or a more even distribution of crops is postulated to have a stabilizing effect on farm output as compared to a homogeneous farm. In this study, we aimed to explore relationships between climate variability, agricultural diversity, and crop yield stability. We used agriculture-focused panel data from Ethiopian households surveyed over four waves from 2011 to 2018 and two climate datasets to derive measures of long-and short-term climate variability. In a twofold analytical approach, we used mixed effects models to separately model (i) farm richness and pastoralism prevalence with climate variability as predictors, and (ii) crop yield stability with diversity, farm input, and climate characteristics as predictors. We found that farm diversity is highest in areas with high temperature variability, or low rainfall variability. This held even when excluding pastoralists households, who have naturally lower diversity. We further showed that pastoralism is least common in areas with high temperature variability and low month-to-month rainfall variability. Both crop richness and crop evenness positively affected temporal yield stability, with each showing a greater effect than irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticide usage. Together, these findings suggest that shifts in typical ranges of climate variability could destabilize farm-level crop yield for smallholders by limiting diversification opportunities. Our findings highlight the need for researchers and policymakers to consider not only the direct effects of climate variability on crop yield, but also its indirect effects on yield stability caused by increasingly limited adaptation choices.
