The beneficial attributes of visual art-making in cancer care: An integrative review

Abstract: We seek to understand what is known about the use of visual art-making for people who have a cancer diagnosis, and to explore how art-making may help address fatigue in the cancer care context. Art-making involves creating art or craft alone or in a group and does not require an art-therapist as the emphasis is on creativity rather than an overt therapeutic intention. An integrative review was undertaken of qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method studies on art-making for people who have cancer, at any stag… Show more

“…These results partially support the findings of previous noncontrolled studies on the effectiveness of art therapy on psychological outcomes in cancer care [30][31][32][33]. This is somewhat encouraging, because novel, evidence-based interventions to improve psychological outcomes for cancer patients are urgently needed, especially in view of the increased life expectancy of this patient population [34], which prolongs the period of being ill.…”

“…For instance, Geue et al [30] and Wood et al [31] use a variety of study designs, making it hard to draw conclusions because of the heterogeneity of the studies included. Furthermore, Ennis et al [33] focus on the beneficial effects only, thus, not paying attention to potential negative outcomes. Most importantly, all reviews indicate that more research is needed in this field and since upcoming literature about art therapy in cancer care is increasing rapidly, more reviews may be relevant.…”

“…For the purpose of this assessment, we define art therapy in the narrow sense, excluding therapies that do not centre on the creation of a piece of visual art. One can attempt to understand the mechanism of art therapy through various theories, such as the attention restoration theory (Ennis, Kirshbaum, & Waheed, 2018) and the body–mind model (Czamanski‐Cohen & Weihs, 2016). Based on the body–mind model, the art therapy's mechanism is focused on the idea that processes of mind and experience of pleasure are embedded in one's sensory and motor experiences through art‐making (Czamanski‐Cohen & Weihs, 2016).…”
