The Behavior of Short and Long Fatigue Cracks at Threshold and Near-Threshold Levels

Abstract: The fatigue crack growth behavior of physically short cracks (0.2 ≤ a ≤ 1 mm), intermediate cracks (1 < a ≤ 2 mm), and long cracks (2 < a < 25 mm) at near-threshold and threshold levels was investigated with single-edge-notched-type specimens using four materials with stress ratios R of 0.05, −1, and 0.5. The materials were SAE 0030 cast steel, AISI 1020 and 1045 hot-rolled steels, and 7075-T6 aluminum. Short cracks grew much faster than long cracks based upon applied ΔK. The transition cr… Show more

“…Here using K c;1020 ≈80 MPa m 1 2 [Klepaczko, 1990], d g ≈ 6 × 10 À5 m, and m = 3.07 [Stephens et al, 1988, p 882] in equation (D3), we obtain C 1020~1 .2 × 10 À10 m [MPa] À3.07 . Even though this estimate is for a material whose C is reported as 6 orders of magnitude smaller than that for C chondrite , it is nevertheless comparable to the value of C 1020 = 2.96 × 10 À10 m [MPa] À3.07 for rolled steel measured in Stephens et al [1988]. Again, by making moderate adjustments (~20%) to the assumed values of K c , 1020 , d g , and/or m-not unreasonable given material variability-an exact match with the measured C 1020 can be obtained.…”
