Depleted fossil fuel resources have led to an investigation of other promising alternatives such as renewable and unconventional energy sources. Shale formations have limited permeability. Therefore, several extraction techniques have been applied to improve residual oil recovery and production. In this work, the techniques applied above ground to extract the organic fractions from oil/gas shale are discussed. Studies related to compositional fractionation, ultrasonic-assisted, microwave-assisted, supercritical fluids, and surface retorting techniques have been conducted systematically in approximately 150 scholarly articles over the past 10 years. The impacts of each technique as well as the drawbacks and challenges are highlighted in this paper. The fractionation techniques are sufficient in general; however, they are time consuming as they include several stages and use a considerable amount of solvents. Ultrasonic and microwave techniques are highly reliant on formation transparency linked to the organic fraction heterogeneous distribution. The surface retorting method, which is highly efficient with up to 90% recovery, for example, the Galoter and Paraho methods, is still dependent on shale particulate size, generates a massive amount of spent shale as waste, and is prominently emissive. Therefore, assessments that can be used to overcome existing drawbacks are considered. This can provide practical insight about these techniques to overcome limitations and concerns in terms of efficiency, cost, environmental issues, and reliability features. The work highlights the dominant extraction techniques for further development.

This work presents the development of an analytical method for sample preparation aiming at the K determination in silicate rocks (basalt, monzogranite and shale fines) following ultrasound dissolution and analysis by F AES. Sample preparation method was optimized by using fractional factorial designs. The following optimal conditions were obtained for each silicate rock: 0.1 g of sample mass for any of the three samples, and volumes of HNO 3 , HCl and HF, respectively, of 2.5, 0.8 and 2.5 mL for basalt; 3.5, 0.8 and 2.5 mL for monzogranite, and 2.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mL for shale fines. Sample dissolution was achieved by using the ultrasound bath at room temperature (25 ºC) for 1 hour. The accuracy was evaluated through the analysis of two certified reference materials, for which there was no statistical difference between the certified and the found K concentration values (95% confidence level). The K concentrations determined were: 1.45 ± 0.01 for basalt; 4.19 ± 0.03 for monzogranite and 1.60 ± 0.02 for shale fines. The developed method presented accurate and reliable results for K amounts in silicate rocks and is simple and safe, which are important features for the implementation of a methodology as a routine analysis.

The pores in oil shale, which act as channels for the migration of products of cracking of organic matter and the place for heat transfer in the rock mass, directly influence pyrolysis efficiency. In this paper, the pore characteristics of oil shale during pyrolysis under the convection and conduction modes of heating were determined by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Results show that in case of both the heating modes, the threshold temperatures for transformation of pore structure from simple to complex are 382 °C and 452 °C, respectively. The porosity of oil shale subjected to convection heating is generally higher than that subjected to conduction heating. By the convection heating mode, the high-temperature fluid can extract the shale oil attached to the pore wall and increase the porosity. As the pyrolysis temperature increases from 314 °C to 555 °C, the average pore size of oil shale increases from 23.70 to 218.15 nm in convection heating and from 21.68 to 145.60 nm in conduction heating. During the pyrolysis of organic matter and extraction of oil and gas, high-temperature steam continuously widens the pores. Finally, when the pyrolysis temperature is above 314 °C, pores with a smaller size gradually change into mesopores and macropores with a larger size. It is proved that under the convection heating mode, oil shale changes from a dense rock to a porous medium with an obviously higher amount of pores.
