The battle of health with environmental evils of Asian countries: promises to keep

Abstract: The objective of the study is to examine the relationship between environmental indicators and health expenditures in the panel of five selected Asian countries, over the period of 2000-2013. The study used panel cointegration technique for evaluating the nexus between environment and health in the region. “…Using a panel cointegration approach similar to Narayan and Narayan (2008), other studies such as Qureshi et al (2015), Yahaya et al (2016), and Zou et al (2016) have employed dierent datasets to examine the relationship between environmental quality, proxied by various indicators related to air pollution, and health care expenditures. Generally, the results from these studies indicate that in the long-run, air pollution has a statistically signicant and positive impact on health care expenditures, but this estimated impact is smaller in the short-run.…”

“…Published empirical works that have examined the impacts of environmental quality on health care expenditures are relatively rare. Available studies have used air quality as a proxy for environmental quality (Jerrett et al (2003); Narayan and Narayan (2008); Qureshi et al (2015); Yahaya et al (2016); Zou et al (2016)).…”

“…Daily et al [30] went further to argue that top management support is critical in the introduction of cutting-edge environmental processes particularly in adequate resource provision and communication of authority in these initiatives, which was supported by the researchers [3,31,32]. These enhancements may be mirrored in explicit activities, such as environmental strategy formulation and implementation, environmental risk management, and/or specific management initiatives required by implementation (e.g., recycling activities).…”
