The Basics of Perimenopause

Abstract: Perimenopause (menopausal transition) is the period preceding the end of menstrual cycle. Perimenopausal phase lasts an average of 5 years, ranging from 2-8 years, while the average age of menopause is 45.5 (±5.5) years. Hormone fluctuations induce menopausal symptoms in women, variances in progesterone and estrogen levels, and sudden increase in follicle stimulating hormone without an apparent decline in estradiol.
