The barley thaumatin‐like protein Hv‐TLP8 enhances resistance of oilseed rape plants to Plasmodiophora brassicae

Abstract: A barley cDNA for the thaumatin-like protein Hv-TLP8 driven by the CaMV 35S promoter was introduced into oilseed rape (Brassica napus) via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. Some transgenic lines were obtained which exhibited enhanced resistance to the clubroot pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae). To increase resistance, double haploid (DH) lines were generated from these transgenic plants. Of these, DH-line 189 showed stable inheritance of the transgenic trait and its associated resistance for at least th… Show more

“…Transgenic tobacco plants with thaumatin gene exhibited enhanced resistance with delayed disease symptoms against fungal diseases caused by Pythium aphanidermatum and Rhizoctonia solani (Rajam et al, 2007). A barley thaumatin-like protein (Hv-TLP8) in transgenic oilseed rape (B. napus) exhibited enhanced resistance to the clubroot pathogen (Plasmodiophora brassicae) (Reiss et al, 2009). Thus, the above discussion suggests the probable association of these genes with biotic stress resistance.…”

“…Microspore-derived embryos were also used for genetic engineering in oilseed rape (Ferrie and Möllers, 2011 and references therein). Moreover, DH methodology was used in transgenic oilseed rape for generating homozygous lines with trait of interest, e.g., host plant resistance to pests (Åhman et al, 2006;Reiss et al, 2009). These results show that this method may accelerate plant breeding because homozygous transgenic lines are bred in one generation.…”
