Zusammenfassung. An Hand einer beispiethaften Sch~itzung der inhalativen Exposition mit Xylol aus Farben wurde der Frage der Vergleichbarkeit yon Punktsch/itzungen mit probabilistischen ScMtzungen nachgegangen. Die Berechungen basieren auf einem einfachen Einraum-Modell unter der Annahme, daf~ die Freisetzung yon Xylol ausschlietglich durch die Geschwindigkeit der Anwendung und die Abnahme der Raumluftkonzentration durch den Luftwechsel limitiert ist. Ffir die probabilistische Sch/itzung wurden die Angaben fiber Gehalte yon Xylol in den Farben und Lacken der BgVV-Produktdatenbank analysiert: Der Anteil schwankt zwischen Extremwerten yon -1 und 44%, der Median liegt bei 11,2%. Die Punktsch~itzung wurde unter Zugrundelegung eines "worst-case" und eines "normal-case" Szenarios berechnet; letzteres ergab eine doppeh so hohe Peakkonzentration yon 0,99 g/m 3 als bei Verwendung des probabilistischen Ansatzes (0,49 g]m3), die durchschnittliche Konzentration war 0,16 g/m 3 start 0,083 g/m 3. Die hier ermittelten Schfitzungen ergaben gr61~enordnungsm~igig eiue LIbereinstimmung mit andern Berechnungsverfahren (z.B. EPA-SCIES), was auf eine Vergleichbarkeit der jeweils verwendeten Modelle hindeutet.Abstract. Estimations of consumer exposure by inhalation have been calculated taking point estimates and were compared to estimates from a probabilistic approach using Monte Carlo analysis. The calculation is based on a model in which the liberation of the highly volatile substance, xylene is only limited by the velocity of administration. The loss of the substance is limited by the air exchange rate. It is also assumed that the substance is used in a single room. Other compartments were not considered. The distribution of xylene in solvent based paints was evaluated by probability analysis of the BgW product data base. In the products there were xylene concentrations in a range between -1 and 44% with a median concentration of 11,2%. For "normal-case" assumptions the exposure estimate differed between single-point and probabilistic calculations: The peak concentration in a room was 0,99 g/m 3 taking the single-point and 0;49 g/m 3 taking the distribution. The average concentration during duration of use was 0,16 g/m 3 and 0,083 g/m 3, respectively. Interestingly, comparison with calculations taking the EPA-SCIES programme revealed similar concentrations showing that models are comparable. The function of an air-conditioning system is to maintain a good thermal climate and acceptable indoor air quality. However, several studies of the prevalence of symptoms point to the likelihood that greater use of air-conditioning in internal spaces leads to a larger number of complaints. The present paper deals with health aspects and complaints linked to the interaction between building, HVAC system, environment and occupant. HVAC-related factors are specially emphasized. In order to minimize the risk of complaints as much as possible, a number of recommendations or guidelines is given for each link in the building process, i.e. from design stage up to maintenance and management. A quality assurance system for this building process is of utmost importance; therefore, policies and procedures have to be developed.
