The autumn and spring diet of brown bear Ursus arctos in the Bieszczady Mountains of Poland

Abstract: The diet of brown bear Ursus arclos Linnaeus, 1758 in the autum n of 1990 and the spring of 1991 was studied by the analysis of faeces contents (46 sam ples, 23 from au tu m n and 23 from spring). Based on frequency of occurrence of food items in individual faeces, the autum n diet of bears was more diverse than the spring diet. W e calculated for each food item frequency percent (F% ), dry weight percent (W % ) and Importance Value (IV % ). Beech Fagus silvatica nuts were the most important food during both s… Show more

“…In addition, brown bears prefer mixed agro-forestry areas, where a large number of plant species occur in large quantities (Kanellopoulos et al 2006). Our results were similar to studies in other European countries (Berducou et al 1983;Cicnkjak et al 1987;Clevenger et al 1992;Elgmork and Kaasa 1992;Frackowiak and Gula 1992;Vlachos et al 2000) with a few variations. “…A large part of this impact could be explained by the diet choice of bears in the study area. During this period, bears feed on emerging spring geophytes, beechnuts from the previous autumn, wild mammals (predated or scavenged), and on bait (crops and carcasses of domestic animals) at hunting towers (Frąckowiak & Gula 1992;Frąckowiak 1997). This food is earlier available at lower altitudes, while higher elevations are still covered by snow.…”
