The auricular impression: An alternate technique

Abstract: Several conditions necessitate surgical or prosthetic ear reconstruction. If an auricular prosthesis is planned, accurate impressions of both the affected and unaffected ears are essential. This article describes a technique that uses a wax-customized, rigid impression tray and irreversible hydrocolloid to minimize distortion during the procedure.

“…b Punching process is done to fabricate stock tray for ear placed handle enables the application of uniform pressure on the tissues to be recorded. The even application of pressure is due to the provision of 6 mm space [4] for the impression material between tray and tissue to be recorded. The use of optimal impression material enhances the inherent advantages of the material while avoiding the disadvantages.…”

“…Reference lines [4] were drawn with the help of measuring scale using skin marker (Hematoxylin pencil). The vertical reference line passes through the most superior and inferior position of ear and horizontal line representing the ala-tragus line was extended posteriorly.…”

“…Consideration should be made with regard to the volume of impression material applied to the remnant because the weight of the material may cause distortion [11]. Soft tissue distortion is less because of the absence of an overlying stone matrix that is present in the CIT [2]. TLIT made with subjects in the upright position meets the previously mentioned concerns.…”

“…Impression techniques play a vital role in accurate reproduction of the affected and unaffected ears, orientation of the ear during wax try-in, and fabrication of ear prostheses. Several impression techniques are described in the literature, including using plaster in a two-piece mold, reversible hydrocolloid enclosed by a wax collar, irreversible hydrocolloid contained in a wax or thermoplastic ring, irreversible hydrocolloid in a rigid tray, and the conventional impression technique (CIT) [2].…”

“…The making of impression of the normal ear is difficult as the helix may get distorted under the weight of the impression material. Therefore, a modified impression technique was used, which combined the advantages of techniques used by Kubon et al 9 and Mathews et al 10 If preoperative casts are not available, the prosthesis can be sculpted from the beginning (wax or clay) or by the donor technique. Wax pattern of the mirror image can be obtained from the ear bank or by impression from a donor.…”
