The Attribution Theory of Learning and Advising Students on Academic Probation

Abstract: Academic advisors need to be knowledgeable of the ways students learn. To aid advisors in their exploration of learning theories, I provide an overview of the attribution theory of learning, including recent applications of the theory to research in college student learning. An understanding of this theory may help advisors understand student self-perceptions and academic motivation. This theory may be especially useful to advisors working with students on academic probation, and potential applications of the … Show more

“…carelessness and lack of professionalism) are not tolerated (Smith, 2013). Third, a widely accepted belief holds that it would be better not to tolerate errors for people to better learn from them (Demetriou, 2011). Previous literature suggested that intolerance of errors: enables people to focus on internal attribution, and cognitive efforts on thorough error analysis; and produces negative emotions which enable one's learning motivation (Zhao, 2011).…”

“…Student diversity is another aspect that complicates the problem. The influence of factors such as ability, effort and task difficulty on students' success, and hence on course planning, is culturally determined (Demetriou, 2011). With such complexity, it becomes difficult to make appropriate decisions when building student-customized course plans, especially for non-expert advisors.…”

“…In such cases, it is the responsibility of academic advisors to carefully analyze each individual case, taking into consideration all influential factors, while having the students at the center of the analysis process. It is crucial that students are then given a sense of control over their current situation and a sense of responsibility of their academic performance (Demetriou, 2011).…”

“…This study refers to Fritz Heider's theory of social attribution. This attribution theory was proposed by a psychologist, Fritz Heider, who focused on events encountered by ordinary people in their lives and whether they relate the results of these events to internal or external factors (Demetriou, 2011). The theory explains that individual behavior from the internal factor includes traits or characters, attitudes, and others.…”
