The Athlete’s Heart

Abstract: Background-It has been postulated that depending on the type of exercise performed, 2 different morphological forms of athlete's heart may be distinguished: a strength-trained heart and an endurance-trained heart. Individual studies have not tested this hypothesis satisfactorily. Methods and Results-The hypothesis of divergent cardiac adaptations in endurance-trained and strength-trained athletes was tested by applying meta-analytical techniques with the assumption of a random study effects model incorporating… Show more

“…The LV responds by increasing its internal diameter. 23,24 Therefore, the aerobic-trained heart develops eccentric hypertrophy. 25 The results of the present study show that in rats submitted to endurance training, the diameter of the axon and of the myelin sheath of the vagus nerve fibers increases.…”

“…LVM is affected by many factors including age, gender, body size and composition, 6,7 athletic training, 38 blood pressure 39,40 and systemic disease processes such as diabetes. 41 To account for the influence of body composition on LVM, various estimates of body size have been used to normalise LVM, including dividing mass by BSA 42 or by height 2.7 (ref.…”

“…9 LV geometry among athletes is sport specific. [10][11][12] Individuals who participate in sports with significant isotonic physiology tend to develop eccentric left ventricular remodeling which is characterized by balanced chamber dilation and wall thickening. In contrast, athletes participating in sports with predominant isometric physiology most commonly develop concentrate left ventricular remodeling which is characterized by wall thickening in the absence of chamber dilation.…”
