Psycholinguistic Analysis of the Structure of the Association Area of the Stimulus Competence

The article deals with the analysis of the association area structure of the notion of competence based on the results of the free association experiment. It was found out that respondents verbalize both key components of the lexicographical and terminological meaning of the notion (awareness, experience, skills, knowledge, mind) and its axiological component (politeness, correctness, professionalism, responsibility, respect). Some reactions testify to the process of identifying competence with the professional sphere of activity (profession, job). As a result of processing of associative reactions, it has been established that the associative gestalt of the word-stimulus forms 10 zones – the notional components, the subject, the subject’s activity, the field of the subject’s activity, leading features of the subject’s activity, the moral and ethical face of the subject of activity, characteristic features of the subject’s activity, evaluative reactions, individual reactions, emotions. Each zone of the associative gestalt in accordance with the quantitative indicators is assigned a rank from 1 to 9 (in two zones the number of reactions coincides). The core of the associative gestalt (ranks 1 – 2) includes frequency responses that correspond to the zones «Notional components» and «Leading features of the subject’s activity», the remaining zones (ranks 3 – 9) form the periphery. Core reactions indicate a sufficiently high level of respondents’ mastering of key components of the notion as well as realization of the demand for a new generation of specialists by native speakers that can effectively apply the acquired knowledge and skills in a certain field of activity. The article also deals with the analysis of associative reactions in accordance with the model of the epistemological structure of consciousness of native speakers. It was found out that in the linguistic consciousness of respondents a certain balance is maintained between subjective (the value and motivational sphere) and objective (the logical and notional sphere) images; dominant in the cognitive activity of informers is the mental level of consciousness images, since in the emotional and affective sphere there are no frequency responses, and the body-perceptual sphere is not represented verbally.

Introduction. Objective: linguacultural analysis of the edification words, collected in a free associative experiment (FAE) and published in the “Kazakh Associative Dictionary”. Materials & Methods. Set of associations of instructive character singled out by the continuous sampling method into a separate fragment of the world paremiological image is a unique representative research material included into the Kazakh Associative Dictionary, in the 23 655 associative reactions of the students of different universities in Shymkent city for112 stimulus words, 272 sayings – edifications recorded in 200 questionnaires. Archetypal layers of the ethnic linguistic consciousness represented in the edifying paremias reflect the Kazakh spiritual and moral values. The content of the FAE and Kazakh Associative Dictionary reflects the indicative feature of the study, i.e. introduction of the gender factor differentiating the men and women associations; it provided for revealing and presentation of the reliable characteristics of the gender determined linguistic consciousness of the informants. The content of the sayings-edification mainly relates to the moral life of the nation, they enshrine the generally accepted ethical norms. Results. Gender irrelevant positions: evil and good are equally evaluated differently; respect for elders is clearly manifested. Gender marked positions: for men – duty to the homeland, responsibility for the family; desire to work together; for women – the desire to protect family values, to correspond to the accepted world order, androcentrism. Conclusions. The linguistic consciousness of the ethnos (in particular, its fragment as an actively demanded paremiological fund) reflects archetypal ideas about the ethnic spiritual and moral worldview values, on which stable elements of the modern Kazakh linguistic culture are formed and actively functioning; being vital for the ethnic integrity.

Automatically recognizing an existing semantic relation (such as "is a", "part of", "property of", "opposite of" etc.) between two arbitrary words (phrases, concepts, etc.) is an important task affecting many information retrieval and artificial intelligence tasks including query expansion, common-sense reasoning, question answering, and database federation. Currently, two classes of approaches exist to classify a relation between words (concepts) X and Y: (1) path-based and (2) distributional. While the path-based approaches look at word-paths connecting X and Y in text, the distributional approaches look at statistical properties of X and Y separately, not necessary in the proximity of each other. Here, we suggest how both types can be improved and empirically compare them using several standard benchmarking datasets. For our distributional approach, we are suggesting using an attentionbased transformer. While they are known to be capable of supporting knowledge transfer between different tasks, and recently set a number of benchmarking records in various applications, we are the first to successfully apply them to the task of recognizing semantic relations. To improve a path-based approach, we are suggesting our original neural word path model that combines useful properties of convolutional and recurrent networks, and thus addressing several shortcomings from the prior path-based models. Both our models significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art within its type accordingly. Our transformer-based approach outperforms current state-of-the-art by 1-12% points on 4 out of 6 standard benchmarking datasets. This results in 15-40% error reduction and is closing the gap between the automated and human performance by up to 50%. It also needs much less training data than prior approaches.
