The Association of Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose Use with Medication Adherence and Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Initiating Non-Insulin Treatment

Abstract: Both SMBG use and medication adherence were associated with similar degrees of A1C reduction after controlling for baseline A1C, suggesting that both factors may be important for attaining glycemic control.

“…34 Examples of successful behavior change interventions in which self-monitoring or feedback on the target behavior include self -monitoring of blood glucose to achieve optimal glucose levels and control in persons with diabetes, 35 , self- monitoring of weight to achieve weight loss in overweight individuals, 36 and audit/feedback to health providers to improve health provider clinical performance. 37 Therefore, in our study, participants also received individual feedback in the form of a written report regarding their dietary NA intake and MA.…”

“…As per prior studies, SMBG use has been associated with better medication compliance. 19,20 Additionally, SMBG data can be used by health care providers to make more timely medication adjustments as was seen in prior studies. 6,12 Finally, patients may use the SMBG data to reinforce lifestyle choices such as eating healthier food and smaller portion sizes and exercising to ensure their blood glucose remains at goal.…”

“…18 Other studies have also documented additional HbA1c reductions of similar magnitude. 2,5,12,19,20 There are several potential explanations as to why SMBG users were able to achieve a goal HbA1c faster than nonusers. As per prior studies, SMBG use has been associated with better medication compliance.…”

“…The benefit of structured SMBG in the management of insulin treated patients is well-established (10). Moreover, regular SMBG use in non-insulin treated patients also has a favorable impact on glycemic control (11,12). It is very important for SMBG to be integrated in an educational plan, in order to get benefit from it.…”
