The Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) Diabetes Prevalence Model: estimates of total diabetes prevalence for England, 2010–2030

Abstract: This model estimates that the prevalence of total diabetes (diagnosed and undiagnosed) in England is higher than previously suggested. An ageing population and increasing prevalence of obesity imply that the prevalence of diabetes will continue to rise and health services should be planned accordingly.

“…One possible explanation is that since the publication of the paper by Harris et al in 1992 [9] there has been an increased awareness in clinical practice of the high prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes, which has led to greater testing and earlier detection. The observation in the UK of a changing ratio of diagnosed to undiagnosed type 2 diabetes supports this view, as in the early 1990s the ratio was 1:1 [12] but is now reported to be closer to 2:1 [23]. However, the estimate by Harris et al of 9-12 years related to the true point of onset of diabetes, which is not the same as the point at which it is detected by screening, especially if screening is infrequent.…”
