The association of PASI scores with CRH-R1 expression in patients with psoriasis

Abstract: Stress is a well-known triggering factor along with genetic predisposition on the onset and during the course of psoriasis by altering the cellular constituents of the immune system. In the skin, there is a local hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis which is the equivalent of the central HPA axis. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is a major regulator of the HPA axis in response to stress. This study was planned to show the role of CRH receptor type 1 (CRH-R1) in pathogenesis of psoriasis, the relatio… Show more

“…It has been suggested that by activating CRH, stress provokes degranulation of the mast cells, releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and exacerbating the psoriasis. [24][25][26][27][28] Cervigen Cemil et al 29 demonstrated increased expression of the CRH-R1 receptor in plaques of psoriasis which may play a part in the etiopathogenesis of this disorder. The cytokines secreted during psoriasis (TNF-alpha, interferon-alpha, interleukins 1 and 6) inhibit serotonin synthesis and increase CRH production, enhancing stress and explaining depressive disorders and predisposition to stress.…”

“…Previous studies revealed the functional role of the CRH/CRH-R1 system in pathological human skin conditions [ 7 , 11 ]. Cemil et al reported the expression of the CRH-R1 in psoriatic skin and its correlation with PASI scores [ 11 ].…”

“…Previous studies revealed the functional role of the CRH/CRH-R1 system in pathological human skin conditions [ 7 , 11 ]. Cemil et al reported the expression of the CRH-R1 in psoriatic skin and its correlation with PASI scores [ 11 ]. In the present study, for the first time we evaluated the protein expression of CRH-R1 in the lesions of LP patients by immunohistochemistry and found the expression of CRH-R1 to be higher in these lesions than in the normal control skin.…”

“…These patients are also at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. CRF signaling occurs in skin, and is involved in local inflammatory responses [103], and has been associated with the intensity of psoriasis [104]. Given the systemic and local inflammatory state of psoriasis patients and the role of inflammation in these other diseases associated with psoriasis, it may be that in a similar manner, inflammation and associated local CRF/steroid hormone signaling within the inner ear could be contributors to SSNHL.…”
