The Association of Intimate Partner Violence, Recreational Drug Use with HIV Seroprevalence among MSM

Abstract: Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been significantly associated with HIV among heterosexual individuals. Yet a similar relationship has not been so clearly described among men who have sex with men (MSM). The aim of this study was to investigate the association of IPV with HIV seroprevalence among MSM. Participants consisted of 7,844 MSM clients who visited the Whitman Walker Clinic in Washington DC from 2000 through 2007, the majority of whom were Caucasian with a median age of 30. “…A study by Houston and McKirnan (2007) reports that experiences of IPV in a sample of MSM were associated with increases in condomless anal intercourse, which confers the highest risk for HIV transmission and acquisition. In contrast, Li, Baker, Korostyshevskiy, Slack, and Plankey (2012) do not detect a significant association between IPV and HIV seroprevalence in another sample of MSM.…”

“…Because some articles reported more than one drug used and/or more than one recall period, 58 records were extracted from 36 articles [8,25,42,46–77]. Two records were excluded from analysis because of a 0 cell for a 2x2 table [49,93]. Finally, 56 records from 35 studies were retained for meta-analysis.…”
