The association of genetic polymorphisms in interleukin-1 receptors type 1 and type 2 with sudden sensorineural hearing loss in a Taiwanese population: A case control study

Abstract: Background Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a disease with an unknown etiology; damage to the auditory nerve from inflammation due to viral infection or vascular incidents has been implicated. According to several studies, cytokines, including interleukins, are associated with SSNHL in terms of serum expression and genetic polymorphisms. Interleukin-1 (IL-1) plays a key role in inflammation and may be associated with SSNHL. This study analyzed the association of single nucleotide po… Show more

“…66 Interleukin-10 deficiency may be linked to sudden SNHL, 67 and changes in interleukin-1 and interleukin-2 may also be implicated. 68 Immunoglobulin levels may show promise as a biomarker for sudden SNHL diagnosis and prognosis. 37 Beyond confirmation of an inflammatory process, diagnostic tests are minimally informative; therefore, the identification of new targets for treatment, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms, 69 may also be on the horizon.…”

“…Various studies have been conducted to investigate cochlear inflammation, showing that there is a potential role of IL-6 and a-TNF regarding monocyte infiltration in cochlear inflammation [20]. Specific or non-specific immune responses and synthesis of certain inflammatory markers are primary responses following inner-ear inflammatory injury [35].…”
