Background: Depression is the most common co-morbidity for people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS); irrespective of disease severity, depression has the greatest impact on quality of life. An emerging paradigm in the treatment of depression is lifestyle medicine. There is significant potential to prevent and treat depression through modification of lifestyle risk factors for people with MS. This study sought to understand the association between lifestyle risk factors, medication and depression risk through the analysis of self-reported data from a large international sample of people with MS. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis recruited a total of 2459 participants via Web 2.0 platforms. Survey data included socio-demographics; a range of lifestyle risk factors; medication; disease variables and depression risk using the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2). Results: In total approximately one fifth (19.3%) of our sample screened positive for depression (PHQ-2 score ≥3). Several demographic factors were significantly associated with this depression risk in bivariate analysis. Regression analyses showed that poor diet, low levels of exercise, obesity, smoking, marked social isolation and taking interferon were associated with greater depression risk. Participants who supplemented with omega 3s, particularly flaxseed oil, had frequent fish consumption, supplemented with vitamin D, meditated, and had moderate alcohol consumption had significantly reduced depression risk. Conclusions: This study demonstrates a significant association between modifiable lifestyle factors and depression risk. Planned longitudinal follow up may clarify causality. Clinicians and people with MS should be aware of the wide range of modifiable lifestyle factors that may reduce depression risk as part of a comprehensive secondary and tertiary preventive medical approach to managing MS.

The global increase in and prevalence of social media is stimulating interest in the utilisation of blogs for research purposes. There is, however, a significant lack of information about the manner and scope of blog use in health research. In this scoping review, we aimed to identify how blogs are being used in health research to date and whether blogging has potential as a useful qualitative tool for data collection. Our purpose was to summarize the extent, range, and nature of research activity using blogs. In our scoping review key search terms were developed and applied to selected databases with 44 relevant studies identified. Studies were examined for the inclusion of blog use in their methods and descriptions of the manner in which they were used. While blogs were used in a variety of ways, the majority of identified studies used blogs for data collection, mostly as one method within a set of data collection methods and primarily for gathering information about experiences, perceptions, and feelings. We identified themes related to the blog's function, the health issue or topic focus, and sampling categories. Our review demonstrated that blogs have potential as a qualitative health research tool for a range of purposes, including data collection. Blogs have particular application for researchers accessing populations beyond their physical reach. Given the global commitment to research for improvements to health and health equity, this review is an essential first step to embark on future qualitative health research using blogs. As the use of social media becomes commonplace, interest in the utilization of blogs for research is growing. ObjectiveTo examine (1) the association between childhood diet and developing MS, age of onset and onset type and (2) the association between diet at age 50 and disability and MRI volumes in people with MS (PwMS).MethodsThe study enrolled 361 PwMS born in 1966 and 125 age‐ and sex‐matched healthy controls (HCs). Information on individual dietary components (fruit, vegetables, red meat, oily fish, whole‐grain bread and candy, snacks and fast food) and MS risk factors at the age of 10 and 50 years were collected using questionnaires. Overall diet quality score was calculated for each participant. Multivariable regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between diet at childhood and developing MS, age of onset and onset type and to evaluate diet at age 50, disability and MRI outcomes.ResultsPoorer overall diet quality and individual dietary components during childhood (less whole‐grain bread, more candy, snacks and fast food and oily fish) were associated with developing MS and onset type (all p < 0.05), but not with the age of onset. Fruit consumption at age 50 was associated with lower disability (Q3 vs. Q1: −0.51; 95% CI: −0.89 to −0.13). Furthermore, several individual dietary components at age 50 were associated with MRI volumetric measures. Higher‐diet quality at age 50 was only associated with lower lesion volumes in PwMS (Q2 vs. Q1: −0.3 mL; 95% CI: −0.5 to −0.02).InterpretationWe demonstrate significant associations between dietary factors in childhood and developing MS, age of onset and onset type and between dietary factors at age 50 and disability and MRI‐derived volumes.
