The Association of Acute Phase Proteins in Stress and Inflammation-Induced T2D

Abstract: Acute phase proteins (APPs), such as plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), serum amyloid A (SAA), and C-reactive protein (CRP), are elevated in type-2 diabetes (T2D) and are routinely used as biomarkers for this disease. These APPs are regulated by the peripheral mediators of stress (i.e., endogenous glucocorticoids (GCs)) and inflammation (i.e., pro-inflammatory cytokines), with both implicated in the development of insulin resistance, the main risk factor for the development of T2D. In this review we pr… Show more

“…In addition, acute pancreatitis generates a robust local and systemic in ammatory response (even in clinically mild episodes), which can produce a continuous irritation of the pancreas. This chronic in ammation can lead to insulin resistance on the one hand and damage to pancreatic tissue on the other hand 41 .…”

“…Phenylalanine and tryptophan belong to aromatic amino acids, which can synthesize acute proteins in response to inflammation [ 50 ]. Such proteins can play an anti-inflammatory effect through immune regulation [ 51 ]. Therefore, the disturbance of aromatic amino acid metabolism in WTI rats may be related to the immune response of RILI.…”

“…Chronic low-grade inflammation is commonly associated with T2D and is thought to cause many of the clinical manifestations associated with the secondary complications of T2D [ 37 ]. Many of these complications are associated with increased oxidative stress and the apoptosis of islet β-cells [ 38 ].…”
