The Association between Vegan Dietary Patterns and Physical Activity—A Cross-Sectional Online Survey

Abstract: A balanced diet and sufficient physical activity (PA) are known to have positive health effects. The relationship between a vegan diet and PA levels is understudied. This cross-sectional online survey aimed to analyze whether different vegan dietary patterns differ in PA. In total, 516 vegan participants were included (June to August 2022). Different dietary patterns were compiled through principal component analysis, while group differences were calculated using independent tests, or chi-squared tests as well… Show more

“…Health literacy, among others, is a prerequisite for equitable health care, which must also be emphasized concerning vegan patients, although the majority of them are welleducated [16,67]. Research has also indicated that vegan people have a solid understanding of general nutrition and are likely to have high levels of health literacy [68,69].…”

“…Some of the widely available products are ultra-processed foods (UPFs). It has been shown that not every vegan food is per se healthy [16,18] and that there are potential adverse effects of vegan or vegetarian UPFs on health [17]. These facts also need to be made widely known to vegans.…”

“…Just as omnivorous diets differ significantly in terms of nutritional sufficiency and health benefits, plant-based diets also fall along a broad spectrum, from very healthy to less nutritious, and consequently, having more or less favorable health benefits [ 14 , 44 ]. An unhealthy plant-based diet might include many highly processed foods, sweetened drinks, and plant-based versions of unhealthy junk foods, resulting in a less healthy dietary pattern [ 45 , 46 ]. Therefore, specific food groups within the plant-based diet, as well as meal preparation methods, require careful consideration.…”

“…In addition, vegans may be at a higher risk of bone fracture [20], potentially due to inadequate calcium and vitamin D, of iodine overconsumption in case of frequent consumption of seaweed/kelp [30], and of hemorrhagic stroke, potentially due to a very low intake of saturated fats [31]. While research on the health effects of "healthy" vs. "less healthy/unhealthy" vegan diet patterns is still sparse, studies identified several types of specific diet patterns among vegans [32,33]. Consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and the energy contribution from UPFs was higher among vegans compared to omnivores [34].…”
