The Association Between the Cardio-ankle Vascular Index and Other Parameters of Vascular Structure and Function in Caucasian Adults: MARK Study

Abstract: Aim:We assessed whether there is an association between the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) score and the carotid intima media thickness (IMT), the pulse wave velocity (PWV) and the central augmentation index (CAIx) that is independent of the subject's cardiovascular risk and pharmacological treatment. Methods: The CAVI score was measured in 500 subjects using a VaSera device and the brachial ankle PWV (ba-PWV) was calculated.

“…In Bland -Altman plots, the mean difference of the two measurements was 0.2, and the 95% limits of agreement (mean 1.96 SD) was 1.2 and 1.7 10) . CAVI is also known to be associated with traditional parameters of vascular structure and function, such as intimamedia thickness (IMT), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and central augmentation index 11) . Furthermore, no special technique is required for the measurement of CAVI.…”

“…There are several studies reporting the relationship between CAVI and carotid arteriosclerosis observed using ultrasonography 19,21,22,32,33) . In summary, the abovementioned results indicated that CAVI could be a good maker of the progression of arteriosclerosis.…”

“…Arterial stiffness (AS) is defined by a reduction in arterial compliance, which has been associated with cardiovascular events and atherosclerotic disease in several reports [1][2][3][4][5] . Clinically, the most representative and noninvasive technique for assessing AS is pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement 6) .…”
