The association between selected risk indicators and severity of peri-implantitis using mixed model analyses

Abstract: Individuals with a history of periodontitis were prone to peri-implantitis, peri-implant bone loss ≥ 2.0 mm and overt in the present study. No association was found between smoking and peri-implant disease in the present study population.

“…Some recent studies showed that smoking did not exert a significant effect on the risk of periimplantitis. [25][26][27] A recent patient-based meta-analysis reported that smoking had no significant effect on the risk of periimplantitis (risk ratio of 1.7). However, an implant-based analysis showed that smoking significantly increased the risk of periimplantitis (risk ratio of 2.1).…”

“…10-year estimates of implant level prevalence of peri-implantitis have varied widely, with groups reporting rates from 12% to 43% of implants. 6,10,11 Risk factors for peri-implant diseases have been identified in prior studies 12,13,14,15 . Strong evidence indicated that poor oral hygiene, a history of periodontitis, and cigarette smoking are associated with greater risk 12 .…”

“…Although some investigators have previously found correlation between smoking and a higher prevalence of peri-implant diseases [11][12][13]20,21 controversial evidence on the negative influence of cigarette smoking on the prevalence of peri-implantitis has also been recently reported. [22][23][24] According to our interpretation of the current literature, while consensus still needs to be reached, patients in such category should definitely be advised about their possible higher risk of experiencing implant failure, particularly, when this habit is associated with a history of previous periodontal disease, as it is many times related. Several authors have demonstrated that patients with a history of periodontitis are more prone to presenting peri-implant diseases.…”
