The association between obesity indices and hypertension: Which index is the most notable indicator of hypertension in different age groups stratified by sex?

Abstract: In this Chinese population, the association of obesity indices and hypertension is inconsistent in different age groups and sexes. It is important to choose appropriate indicators for specific groups of people.

“…This study examined three different indicators of fat distribution-BMI, WHpR, and WHtR-which have reportedly been associated with the prevalence of hypertension in both genders. In previous cross-sectional studies, ROC curve analyses demonstrated that WHtR was a better indicator than other indices among young men and women, but BMI and WC were more sensitive markers among middle-aged men and women [16]. Meanwhile, for middle-aged and elderly Brazilians, Dutra et al [8] reported that WC and WHpR had a stronger relationship with prevalence of hypertension compared to other indices.…”

“…Men tend to have greater skeletal muscles than women and women tend to have a higher percentage of body fat than men [25]. Thus, the inconsistent association of obesity indices and hypertension may be due to different races, age groups, and sexes [16]. The mechanisms that lead to increased incidence of hypertension in individuals with increased WHtR remain to be elucidated.…”

“…The ABSI had the lowest discriminatory power, in agreement with our findings. The results depend to a large extent on the ethnicity [37,38], sex [36,37], and age of the participants [39], and also on the indices selected for analysis. According to the National Cholesterol Education Program, Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III), the cut-off point for abdominal obesity is 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women [21].…”

“…For physical examination and treatment planning, measurement of body mass index (BMI) and the assessment of 10-year CV risk were similarly low in both clinics. Both of these aspects are useful for raising of awareness in patients [22][23][24] and their physicians and enhance the efficacy of treatment [10,[25][26][27][28]. Technology could be used to help fill in the indices and CV risk results prior to the examination.…”
