The association between large congenital melanocytic naevi and cutaneous melanoma: preliminary findings from an Internet-based registry of 379 patients

Abstract: There is ample evidence in the literature to support the fact that there is an increased risk of the development of melanoma in individuals with a large congenital melanocytic naevus (LCMN). The published melanoma risk estimates, by and large, do not distinguish between cutaneous and extracutaneous melanomas. It is currently not known to what extent each contributes to the overall cited melanoma risk estimates. In order to obtain a better understanding of the association between LCMN and cutaneous melanoma ari… Show more

“…Nonetheless, our results were generally compatible with other major studies published. 5,8,11,13,14,26 CONCLUSIONS On the basis of data from a large cohort of 1008 affected persons, LCMN of the garment type were associated with a low cutaneous melanoma occurrence of 2.9%. Although females with a garment nevus were more prevalent, males were at higher risk for development of cutaneous melanoma.…”

“…The largest previously published cohort numbered 379 persons, also similarly entered via another Internet-based nevus support group. 13,14 Large congenital melanocytic nevi (LCMN) are generally defined as a nevus that has or is predicted to have a largest diameter of at least 20 cm at adulthood. Infants with a nevus at least 9 cm in diameter on the skull or 6 cm in diameter on the body and persons with a nevus covering a substantial portion of a small area of the body (eg, face, hand, or foot) were included.…”

“…In mehreren, z. T. prospektiven Studien fand sich eine symptomatische NCM bei ca. 5-7% der Patienten mit CMN > 20 cm [20,22,23]. Kinsler Die v. a. in Deutschland verbreitete Früh-dermabrasion und das in Belgien entwickelte Verfahren der neonatalen Küretta-ge können als früh-ablative CMN-Therapien zusammengefasst werden.…”
