BackgroundWhether there is an association between TFAs and periodontitis is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between moderate/severe periodontitis and plasma level of elaidic acid, a major trans-fatty acid component, in American adults.MethodsThe National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) years 2009–2010 were used to screen a total of 1,610 people. The independent variable of interest is plasma elaidic acid level, the dependent variable is periodontitis, and the covariates include socio-demographic variables, lifestyle variables, systemic diseases, etc. The distribution of variables in the covariate differences between the different independent groups according to tertile was investigated using a multiple linear regression model. To examine the association between plasma elaidic acid levels and moderate/severe periodontitis, three models were used.ResultsMultiple logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between plasma elaidic acid level and moderate/severe periodontitis after adjustment for potential confounders (OR = 1.021, 95%CI: 1.004–1.039, P = 0.01394). Subjects with the highest tertile of plasma elaidic acid levels were 51.9% more likely to have periodontitis compared with subjects with the lowest tertile of plasma elaidic acid levels (OR = 1.519, 95% CI: 1.136–2.030, P = 0.00477). No possible sources of heterogeneity were identified in the subgroup analyses.ConclusionPlasma elaidic acid levels are associated with periodontal disease in American adults.

Introduction The relationship between metabolic syndrome and vestibular dysfunction has attracted significant attention; however, consensus regarding their association remains elusive. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the relationship between metabolic syndrome and vestibular dysfunction through observational analysis of the NHANES database and Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Data from the NHANES database spanning 1999 to 2004 were utilized for observational analysis, alongside Mendelian Randomization (MR) methodology. NHANES data analysis was conducted using EmpowerStats 4.1, while MR analysis utilized publicly available Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) data. Results Observational analysis of NHANES data revealed an association between metabolic syndrome and vestibular dysfunction in unadjusted models, which disappeared upon adjustment for various confounding factors. MR analysis results indicated no significant causal relationship between metabolic syndrome and vestibular dysfunction; however, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and hypertension were identified as potential risk factors for vestibular dysfunction. Conclusion The findings of this study suggest that there is no apparent association between metabolic syndrome and vestibular dysfunction. However, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and hypertension may serve as risk factors for vestibular dysfunction. This discovery contributes to the precision prevention and treatment of vestibular dysfunction, thereby enhancing the quality of life for affected individuals.

Background Periodontitis can be avoided with a healthy lifestyle. However, studies have only looked at one lifestyle, ignoring the connection between lifestyle patterns and periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to look at the association between modifiable lifestyle patterns and periodontitis. Methods Data were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2009–2010 and 2011–2012. Smoke, drink, exercise, sleep duration, oral exams, and self-rated oral health were all lifestyle factors. The CDC/AAP classification/case definition was used to evaluate periodontitis. Drawing upon latent class analysis, distinct patterns of lifestyle were identified, with each participant exclusively affiliated with a single pattern. The association between lifestyle classes and periodontitis was then examined using ordinal logistic regression. Results 4686 (52%) of the total 9034 participants, with a mean age of 54.08, were women. Three lifestyle latent classes were found by fitting 2–10 models: “Class 1” (52%), " Class 2” (13%), and " Class 3” (35%). The “Class 1” displayed a prevalence of oral examination (75%), favorable self-rated oral health (92%), and engagement in physical activity (50%). The ‘Class 2’ exhibited the lowest alcohol consumption (64%) and smoking rates (73%) but the highest prevalence of physical inactivity (98%). The ‘Class 3’ showed a tendency for smoking (72%), alcohol consumption (78%), shorter sleep duration (50%), absence of oral examinations (75%), and suboptimal self-rated oral health (68%). The influencing variables for the latent classes of lifestyle were age, education, and poverty level. Periodontitis risk may rise by 24% for each additional unhealthy lifestyle practiced by participants (OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.18–1.31). The ‘Class 3’ (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.52–2.13) had a greater risk of periodontitis compared to the ‘Class 1’. Conclusions Our analysis revealed that unhealthy lifestyle patterns are associated with periodontitis. These different lifestyle patterns need to be taken into account when developing public health interventions and clinical care.
