The Association Between Child Abuse and Attempted Suicide

Abstract: Abstract. Background: Child abuse and suicide among the young population is a serious and prevalent problem. Many studies have demonstrated that people with adverse childhood experiences, such as child abuse, are likely to develop suicidal behavior. This study evaluates the connection between child abuse and suicidal behavior in the Hong Kong community where incidents of child abuse have been on the rise over the past decade. Aims: To determine the association between child abuse and attempted suicide in the c… Show more

“…Our research also reported that adolescents who admitted that they had been abused were more likely to engage in suicidal behaviour than those who indicated otherwise. This finding is consistent with previous studies showing a significant association between a history of abuse and suicidal behaviour among adolescents [31][32][33][105][106][107]. Movement restriction caused by the pandemic lockdowns led to a surge in recorded incidences of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation [108,109].…”

“…Additionally, we found that forced sexual activity, especially if it occurred in childhood and adolescence, was associated with a greater risk of mortality due to cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease. In support of our findings, early life physical or sexual abuse has been associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts,5354 cardiovascular diseases,1114 respiratory diseases,55 and gastrointestinal illnesses in later life,56 which might eventually lead to a greater risk of mortality. Similarly, in a meta-analysis consisting of 37 studies, Hughes and colleagues estimated the risk for 23 outcomes and found that adverse childhood experiences were associated with a greater risk of suicide attempt, illicit or problematic drug use, cardiovascular diseases (eg, heart attack, coronary heart disease, or ischemic heart disease), chronic respiratory diseases (eg, tuberculosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and digestive diseases (liver disease, jaundice, or hepatitis) 57.…”

“…Finally, the lack of data regarding childhood trauma and impulsivity is a potentially important limitation of this study. Sexual abuse notably increases the risk for SA in populations with mental disorders 83 , especially for 'recurrent' SA 84 , possibly in interaction with variations in the BDNF gene 22,85 . However, the latter associations rather regarded depression and anxiety than SA itself 24,72 .…”
