The Association between Age-Related Macular Degeneration and the Risk of Mortality

Abstract: Studies have investigated the association between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and subsequent risks of mortality, but results have been equivocal. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of prospective cohort studies to assess the association of AMD and the risk of mortality in the general population. We searched PubMed and EMBASE for trials published from 1980 to 2016. We included 11 cohort studies that reported relative risks with 95% confidence intervals for the association of AMD and mortality, inv… Show more

“…In this meta-analysis, the hazard ratio was considered as a surrogate measure of RR, and the OR was transformed into RR by the formula RR = OR/[(1 − Po)+(Po × OR)], where Po is the incidence of the end point in the control group [ 17 ]. Forest plots were made to visually assess the RR and corresponding 95% CI across studies [ 18 , 19 ]. We calculated Q test (significance level of P < 0.10) and the I 2 statistic (ranging from 0% to 100%) to examine the heterogeneity across studies.…”

“…Specifically, a relative risk of mortality secondary to AMD of 1.09 was incorporated in the model in order to inform mortality rates in AMD compared with unadjusted levels. 31 Treatment was assumed to be provided for a lifetime unless otherwise stated; anti-VEGF therapeutic switching is not accounted for within the model. Initial disease severity rates for both treated and fellow eyes across treatment cohorts were derived from a pooled analysis of HAWK and HARRIER trials.…”
