The Assessment of the Magnitude of Frontal Plane Postural Changes in Breast Cancer Patients After Breast-Conserving Therapy or Mastectomy – Follow-up Results 1 Year After the Surgical Procedure

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in Polish women. Management of breast cancer includes surgical treatment as well as adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal therapy, and combination regimens. One of the adverse consequences of oncological management of breast cancer may involve changes in frontal plane body posture. The objective of the study was to assess the frontal plane body posture changes in women treated for breast cancer. A prospective study including 101 of female breast cancer patien… Show more

“…Only studies on posture after mastectomy were conducted [2730] but these did not include dynamic measurement. In Hooper et al trial [31], the authors presented evidence on the mechanical consequences of reduction mammoplasty on the low back.…”

“…As demonstrated in previous analyses performed at our site, a risk of adverse events exists also in the case of breast-saving surgical procedures. The adverse effects include limited range of motion within the shoulder joint, lymphedema, and postural defects within the sagittal and frontal planes [ 8 , 9 , 14 ]. We were also able to demonstrate a correlation between the number of dissected nodes and the reduction in the range of motion within the shoulder joint as confirmed by other studies [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…When the intervention within the axillary fossa is limited to the removal of the sentinel node, the incidence of adverse events is lower in a statistically significant manner. Long-term adverse effects of BCT-related surgery with axillary lymph node dissection include lymphedema of the upper limb, limited range of motion of the upper limb on the operated breast side, winged scapula, paresthesias, and postural defects [ 8 , 9 ].…”
