Abstract. The importance of forest in providing the natural habitat for plants and animals; storing hundreds of billions of tons of carbon; buffering against flood and drought; stabilizing soils, influencing climate change and providing food and home for the indigenous people has led the international community to protect them from further destruction in the future. In addition, the sustainable tourism is a key source of income and employment for local communities, which, in turn, provide strong incentives to protect biodiversity. For such reasons, and given the capacity limits of environmental resources coupled with the quantitative growth of tourism, there is an urgent need for the development of tourism to take biodiversity seriously. In this study we investigate the impact of sustainable tourism and good governance indicators on biodiversity loss in Malaysia for the period 1996 to 2012. In this study we employed the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Dynamic OLS (DOLS) and Fully-Modified OLS (FMOLS) which is efficient in small sample to estimate the long-run model of biodiversity loss (proxy by deforestation rates). Interestingly, our results found that good governance and sustainable tourism do contribute in mitigating biodiversity loss in Malaysia.

An Entropy-Perspective Study on the Sustainable Development Potential of Tourism Destination Ecosystem in Dunhuang, China

This paper analyzed the characteristic of the tourism destination ecosystem from perspective of entropy in Dunhuang City. Given these circumstances, an evaluation index system that considers the potential of sustainable development was formed based on dissipative structure and entropy change for the tourism destination ecosystem. The sustainable development potential evaluation model for tourism destination ecosystem was built up based on information entropy. Then, we analyzed each indicator impact for the sustainable development potential and proposed some measures for the tourism destination ecosystem. The conclusions include: (a) the requirements of Dunhuang tourism destination ecosystem on the natural ecosystem continuously grew between 2000 and 2012; (b) The sustainable development potential of the Dunhuang tourism destination ecosystem was on an oscillation upward trend during the study period, which is dependent on government attention, and pollution problems were improved.

Beach tourism is one of the tourism models that most partners realize to manage to its sustainability. Integration of thoughts for various sectors was also needed for a walk to success. This research, thus, sought for ways to investigate for proper beach tourism management model with certain component. Testing will be implemented in area along the gulf of Thailand which is known by the name "The Royal Coast". The mixed-methods design was employed for the study: focus group (n=88), policy meeting (n=29) and questionnaire (n=800). Both host whose stakeholders in public and privates business in the beach area and communities and guests or tourists were asked and discussed. The results from the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that six components were the significant factors for sustainable beach management, yielding Chi-square =10.870 Chi-square/df = 1.812, df = 6, p = 0.092, GFI = 0.996, CFI = 0.993, RMR = 0.008, RMSEA = 0.032. The sustainable beach tourism included six components of management on marketing and promotion management, tourist attraction management, participation management, environmental, cultural and education management, process, plan and policy management and personnel management respectively. All six components was assigned and implemented for testing in sustaining beach tourism management on the Royal Coast.
